Long Term Care and How to Pay for It--

Watch a video titled "Who Cares-Kiplinger's No-Nonsense Look at Long Term Care and how to pay for it".  This is one of the best on non-biased long term care planning which shows the types of situations and places to live.  It is a good main introduction to elder care.

A CALL FOR OUTSTANDING CAREGIVER NOMINEES

A caregiver is anyone who routinely helps others who are limited by a medical or chronic condition. Care giving tasks can include bathing, dressing, preparing meals, shopping, administering medications and other medical procedures, assisting with mobility issues, financial and legal oversight and other duties. Even if a person is paid to do these tasks, it is often for a fairly low wage. Putting these very personal responsibilities in someone else’s hands is no small undertaking. Good caregivers understand this and provide care that is high in quality; respectful of the person they are caring for and done with love and grace.

The Senior Action Network (SAN) is seeking nominations of outstanding caregivers for the 10th Annual Caregiver Recognition Dinner, which will be held on November 4, 2010. For many seniors, and their families, a caregiver is often an unsung hero. Seniors can be dependent upon these hero’s for contributing to the completion of their daily activities and the quality of their lives.

“A caregiver is often an unpaid family member or friend. A paid caregiver is an extension of the family, and the backbone of our industry. When we started this event nine years ago, SAN members wanted to fill a void in our community to say thanks to the outstanding family members and workers who give of themselves everyday keeping older adults happy, healthy and well-cared for,” says Cyndi Lounsbury, President, Senior Action Network. “Today, we are pleased to present the premier event which honors caregivers on behalf of the families and the facilities or homes they serve.”

Eligible caregivers are unpaid family members, friends or volunteers, and paid caregivers who may be found in retirement centers, assisted living facilities, family homes, skilled nursing facilities or group care. Adults or youth caregivers may be nominated. Care recipients, or their family members, supervisors, co-workers, and others are encouraged to nominate a care provider they consider special. SAN is seeking nominees in both paid and volunteer positions. Nominees may come from Thurston, Mason or Lewis Counties. All nominees and selected honorees will be recognized at the Caregiver Recognition Dinner, which includes the Silent Auction and Entertainment on Thursday, November 4, 2010, at Olympics West Retirement Center.

Nominations are due October 1, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. to the Senior Action Network:

P.O. Box 12212, Olympia, WA. 98508-2212

or email them to planningforltc@aol.com.

Tickets to the Caregiver Recognition Dinner may be purchased for $25.

SAN Work Party - April 3rd

Thank you very much to the SAN Members who braved the wind and rain on Easter Saturday to help seniors clean up their yards.  The volunteers worked on three yards and a fourth was postponed at the request of the client.

Our clients have been writing and calling in their thanks.  Jean says “thanks a million , you guys did a great job.”  Nancy described her volunteers as “wonderful” and “they did so much work – they were a great help”

SAN Yard Work Day has been a mostly annual event for many years – sometimes we rake leaves in the Fall or help clients get ready for the Spring.  It is always a rewarding event and the more the merrier.
